On Friday, Canada’s health minister warned the world that $20 billion worth of mouthwash was “a poison” and should be banned, saying the drugs are “a product of ignorance and the misuse of antibiotics.”
The minister made the comments during a question period at Parliament Hill on Friday, during which questions were asked by NDP MP Randall Garrison.
Garrison questioned the Minister of Health on the drug’s impact on people with allergies and whether there is a link between the drug and autism.
“We need to be asking questions, and we need to ask them with clarity and a little bit of urgency,” said Garrison, who is also the chair of the Canadian Lung Association.
Gaston also said the government needs to get its act together and stop wasting millions of dollars of taxpayers’ money on “mild, harmless” mouthwash.
“I know that the government is committed to protecting the public from this terrible, dreadful drug,” he said.
Gaston said it was the government’s responsibility to address the drug crisis and that the minister has not answered the question of whether the drugs could be used to treat allergies.
“It’s not a question of just making a few dollars here and there, or making a billion dollars,” said the MP.
“This is a real threat to Canadians, this is a threat to their health.”
Health Minister says $20-billion drug has been used to ‘kill’ people with allergic reactions to the drug, reports CBC News”It is a drug that is a product of the ignorance and misuse of anabolic steroids,” said Trudeau.
“It’s a product that was developed by pharmaceutical companies and used to kill people with asthma, heart attacks, cancer, depression.
And it has not been shown to help people.””
It does kill people.
It does kill, but we can’t stop it.
We can’t eliminate it,” Trudeau said.”
But if we don’t make sure we’re using a safer, more effective product, if we continue to waste money, if the government doesn’t make the investment in science and technology to understand the drug better, we will continue to see millions of people die.””
There are no easy answers.
But it is clear that this drug is a danger to Canadians.”
Health Canada also issued a statement saying the drug is not a controlled substance and that it was not the government agency responsible for the production and marketing of the drug.
“The ministry is aware of concerns raised about the use of the product, which is not regulated,” the statement read.
“As a precautionary measure, Health Canada is monitoring the health and safety of Canadians and will make recommendations to address these concerns.”
Garrison, who said he was a lifelong health care professional and has been critical of Health Canada, was not pleased with the minister’s comments.
“They’re not saying that we shouldn’t be using it because it’s a dangerous drug,” said Grant Frew, who heads the advocacy group Canadians for Medicinal Alternatives.
“They’re saying that the product is a dangerous product.
This is a terrible, terrible product.”
The federal government has yet to decide whether or not to ban the drug or to restrict its use in Canada.
